The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has selected the Pu‘u Mali restoration area for its first carbon forestry project.
On Friday, the Land Board approved the issuance of a request for proposals for the effort, which would allow private entities to support to offset emissions.
The area is located in the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve.
Without such a program, reforestation could cost $5.3 million.
